Replacing fossil chemicals by microbially produced sustainable counterparts has long been a goal of synthetic biology. So far, this has not been successful for hydrophobic aromatic hydrocarbons such as styrene or benzene, because they are too toxic for bacteria. Prof. Nick Wierckx from the IBG-1 wants to change this with the project: “PROSPER - Production of a second phase of hydrophobic aromatics with solvent-tolerant Pseudomonas”. For this project, he has received a prestigious Consolidator Grants from the European Research Council (ERC). This will provide him and his team with around 2 million euros in funding over a period of five years.
