Neuartige MagnetkopplungScanning tunnelling microscope image showing the magnetization of individual cobalt atoms (cones) on a platinum surface. The colour of the cobalt atoms reflects the direction of the spins (up: green; down: red). The majority of atoms is shown in red because they follow an external magnetic field pointing downward. Only the left atom in a pair of atoms with a distance d = 0.7 nm has an upward orientation, the reason being the so-called RKKY coupling to its partner.
