Balloon-borne atmospheric observations in times of Corona

Jülich, 27th April 2020 – IEK-7 researchers have successfully carried out a balloon double launch to investigate the current state of the atmosphere. Both balloons reached altitudes of more than 28 km and therefore registered air masses up to the middle stratosphere.

The payloads contained complementary sensors to determine as many parameters as possible near-simultaneously, including water vapour, ozone, carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons. Interesting results are to be expected at the moment, both because of the unusually low flight traffic as well as the large stratospheric ozone losses over the arctic this year.
