Research topic:

Diffusion of water molecules in the brain can be used to infer underlying white matter connectivity. I investigate white matter structure in ageing using Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging (NODDI) which measures neurite density and orientation dispersion using a three-compartment model: extra-neurite, intra-neurite, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) compartments. Using data from the 1000BRAINS cohort, I aim to characterize these compartments in normal ageing. NODDI parameters will be compared with other diffusion parameters such as FA and MD. I also explore associations between white matter microstructure and cognitive abilites such as memory and executive function. Changes in neurite density and orientation dispersion in ageing can potentially serve as biomarkers for differentiating normal and pathological ageing.
