Getting to the Bottom of Memory

Jülich, 7 March 2014 – Signal transduction in the hippocampus, a region of the brain connected with learning and memory processes, is the focus of a study by French and Jülich scientists. The researchers investigated the interaction between astrocytes – non-neuronal cells – and excitatory neurons. The membrane protein connexin 30, which is found in astrocytes, appears to play a crucial role in signal transduction. The scientists describe the underlying mechanisms of this process in the current issue of Nature Neuroscience (DOI: 10.1038/nn3662).
