Polarized Deuterium to Bring Nuclear Fusion up to Speed

Jülich/Düsseldorf, 10 August 2016 – Polarized deuterium could significantly improve reaction rates in future fusion reactors. A team of physicists headed by Prof. Markus Büscher from Jülich’s Peter Grünberg Institute and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf’s Institute of Laser and Plasma Physics will work together with colleagues from Russia’s Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics to develop a new source for polarized deuterium molecules. The project is being jointly funded with a total of more than € 500,000 over the next three years by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Russian Science Foundation (RSF). Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Nuclear Physics Institute and Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics are also involved as project partners.
