New Approach to Preventing Diabetes and Alzheimer’s

Düsseldorf/Jülich, 19 September 2016 – Amyloid deposits in the insulin-producing islets of Langerhans of the pancreas are viewed as a potential cause of the development of type II diabetes mellitus. The main constituent of these amyloid deposits is the peptide hormone amylin. In a current publication in Scientific Reports, researchers from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and Forschungszentrum Jülich show that a specially developed binding protein may suppress the formation of amyloid deposits.
