Measuring the Motion of Runners More Precisely

Jülich researchers develop a new motion analysis system

Jülich, 8 November 2017 – Scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich have developed a new technology to spatially and temporally record motion and sequences of motion with high precision. What’s new about the technology is that instead of optical markers or reflectors, it uses radio chips and high-frequency radio signals to determine precise positions each millisecond and to the exact millimetre. The system could potentially be used in the field of medical diagnostics and rehabilitation. Another possible area of application is in the indoor navigation systems of robots, for example. In order to demonstrate the technology, a motion analysis system on a treadmill is to be developed together with industry partner CONTEMPLAS GmbH. The project will receive € 1.8 million in funding from the Helmholtz Association’s Helmholtz Validation Fund (HFV).
