Supercomputers help us to find solutions to major scientific challenges and are indispensable for modern research. The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates the most powerful computer systems for scientific and technical applications in Europe and makes it available for research purposes to scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich, in Germany, and throughout Europe. JSC performs various research and development tasks, frequently in tight cooperation with national in international partner institutes. To support users of the supercomputers, JSC benefits from its expertise in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Data Science, and contributes to present and prospective projects and cooperations. Thereby, algorithms and applications are analyzed, optimized, and developed collaboratively with domain-specific scientists coming, e.g., from the domains of Engineering, Physics, or Biology. Furthermore, software tools and libraries are developed that support the users in using the HPC systems efficiently.

Scientist for Scalable Artificial Intelligence and High-Performance Data Analytics

Your Job:

  • Development of new and scalable methods for Artificial Intelligence (AI), primarily for Engineering applications.
  • Support in porting and optimization of existing algorithms on heterogeneous supercomputing architectures of the highest performance class.
  • Performance analysis of AI and simulation methods on new computing architectures and consultation in their usage.
  • Together with international software experts from AI and various application domains you lay the foundation for a broadly applicable software framework that contains novel scalable AI components.
  • The position will be integrated into the Simulation- and Data Laboratory “Highly-Scalable Fluids & Solids Engineering”, which belongs to the “Computational Science” division of JSC and performs research in various fields of Engineering Science.

Your Profile:

  • M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Experiences in algorithm development for AI methods and in their application to solve various scientific problems, primarily in Engineering Science (fluid- and structural mechanics).
  • You are firm in High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA).
  • Experience in using supercomputers and enthusiastic about newest scientific technologies in this area.

In addition, you bring:

  • Experiences in using existing AI methods and AI frameworks
  • Experiences in parallel programming, porting, and optimization of codes and in numerical simulations
  • Experiences in at least one higher (object-oriented) programming language (preferably C++) and at least in one scripting language (preferably Python)
  • Very good English skills, both written and spoken

Further desirable knowledge and/or experiences:

  • Good German skills, both written and spoken
  • Experiences in programming accelerators (e.g., GPGPUs)
  • Knowledge in physics-based AI methods
  • Knowledge in Computational Fluid Dynamics methods (finite-volume, finite-element, or finite-difference methods)
