Measurement of Pedestrian Flow Characteristics

As basic investigations we determined the fundamental diagram for the movement along a line experimentally and analyzed various approaches for the local interaction between the pedestrians by simulations.

The video demonstrates the decrease of the velocity with increasing density. You can observe the fall of the step-length as well as the safety-margin. The resulting fundamental diagram is shown in the next picture.


By analyzing the data we found that the mean distances between pedestrians is a linear function of velocity, and by simulations we found that a velocity dependent space requirement is essential for obtaining the correct shape of the fundamental diagram.
