National German Earth System Modelling strategy

The societal challenges related to climate change have never been more obvious and urgent than today. Earth System Modelling (ESM) has been heavily reliant on HPC for decades. Enabling the German Earth system modelling community to make best use of current and the upcoming heterogeneous exascale high performance (HPC) computing systems is the main goal of the national Earth System Modeling Support Team.

To this end the BMBF financed project natESM is supported by the German Climate Consortium as a part of the national German Earth System Modelling strategy. Under the leadership of the German Climate Compute Centre (DKRZ), a team of four software engineers, two located at DKRZ and 2 located at JSC, offer HPC-support, consultancy, and training programmes. Within up to 6 months lasting coding sprints the team assist in porting, optimising, and refactoring already existing ESM codes to heterogeneous HPC architectures. The knowledge gained during each spring will be communicated to the broader community in dedicated trainings and workshops. The call for support is a rolling call and applications for a sprint can be handed in via the project's website.
