Powerful research, powerful images

This glass plasma ring from Jülich is about the size of a record and has been on display as an interactive hands-on exhibit at Deutsches Museum in Nuremberg since September 2021. Andreas Schwaitzer and his team from the glass workshop at ZEA-1 have elaborately produced the glass ring, created a vacuum inside it and then filled it with a little noble gas. “In combination with the know-how of an Aachen-based company for high-frequency technology, this makes it possible to playfully understand how fusion reactors work,” Schwaitzer explains. “The plasma can be ignited in the ring, its shape can be influenced by magnets, and everything can be observed at close range.” In other words, hands-on science.
