Science Online: Scientific Diplomacy – Bridges to Promote Science and Peace

In this talk, Prof. Ghaleb Natour, director at ZEA-1, will present examples of scientific collaborations that promote science and peace through cooperation across borders. These include SESAME, the Georgian–German Science Bridge (GGSB), the Palestinian–German Science Bridge (PGSB), and the Malta Conferences Foundation.

SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) is a scientific facility built by a remarkable consortium in the Middle East, where both the HGF (HESEB) and the EU (BEATS) are building a beam line.

The Georgian-German Science Bridge (GGSB) offers lectures, seminars and workshops. A highlight of the GGSB is the establishment of SMART LABS, e.g. in atmospheric science with, among others, air samples from the Caucasus, EDM Smart Lab, engineering and technology and simulations.

The Palestinian-German Science Bridge (PGSB) promotes scientific collaborations on topics ranging from simulation tools and methods of pedestrian dynamics in safety research, plant and algae research under warm outdoor temperatures, neuroscience research in diverse social environments to photovoltaic and building technology research under diverse climatic conditions, and disease research with regard to cultural backgrounds.

Both Science Bridges support students who carry out their project work at various institutes in Jülich. Cooperations in which bachelor, master and doctoral theses are carried out, as well as research exchanges of scientists and faculty members are supported both organizationally and financially.

The Malta Conferences Foundation organizes annual meetings of international scientists, mainly from the Middle East, for exchange on common topics of interest, and facilitates meetings of young scientists with Nobel laureates.
