Collective outflow from a small multiple stellar system


The image shows the formation of a small stellar cluster in a massive
accretion disk. The protostars launch outflows perpendicular
to the disk. Because the angular momenta of the forming protostars are
aligned, the individual outflows merge to form a collective outflow
which looks similar to observed outflows around high-mass stars.
This suggests that real outflows might not be driven by the central
massive star, as previously thought, but by their lower-mass companions.
