IEK-9 performs application-oriented fundamental research to develop efficient next-generation electrochemical technologies in the fields of energy storage, energy conversion and CO2-valorization.

In the framework of Jülich energy research activities, IEK-9 acts as both, providing important stimulus for new R&D topics, as well as bridging the gap between basic science and applications in terms of close bilateral cooperation with industry. The research topics at IEK-9 focus on key enabling technologies relevant to the transformation of the energy sector towards sustainability, and have social acceptance. Moreover, ‘integrated energy’ scenarios are developed by reducing CO2-emissions in the chemical industry and energy and transportation sectors. This includes ‘Power-to-X’ technologies for CO2-valorization.

Technology transfer and pre-industrial innovation: the implementation of research results in innovative products is performed in close cooperation with industry. In addition, next-generation technologies are validated for their degradation behavior, and reliable lifetime predictions and accelerated life tests are performed.

Knowledge transfer: based on the available expertise, offers for education and training span from cooperation with universities, over organization of conferences, training workshops and summer schools to promote opportunities at all professional levels.
