COSY Operation

COSY is capable of providing proton or deuteron beams with a magnetic rigidity of 1 to 11 Tm for internal as well as external experiments. The beam quality can be enhanced due to beam cooling on request. Optionally, specific polarization states can be prepared.

(The possible kinetic energies for protons are between 45 MeV and 2.7 GeV, for deuterons between 90 MeV and 2.1 GeV. Per injetion cycle there are roughly 1010 particles available. The typical data taking time of internal experiments is between a few minutes and one hour per injection. For external experiments data taking time is between a few nanoseconds and a few minutes per extraction. Beam preparation (acceleration to final energy and setup of other desired beam features) typically takes about 5-100 seconds.
