Quality Management at Forschungszentrum Jülich

Forschungszentrum Jülich complies with defined norms and standards to ensure the quality of its research, developments, and services. In doing so, it uses a range of internationally and nationally established quality management systems which are applied to different areas at Jülich. These serve to implement legal requirements and meet the demands of funding agencies, partners, and clients.

The quality management systems in use comprise standards on business processes, research processes and framework conditions, and the development and operation of scientific and technical infrastructure. Specific rules apply, for example, to the production of radiopharmaceuticals, analytics, the development of medical devices, and the production of large-scale devices for neutron research; in Corporate Communications, there are regulated procedures for the organization of events.

The aim is to ensure that the products and values originating from Jülich satisfy our own high requirements and meet international quality standards, and to guarantee the safety of humans and the environment in all areas and at all times.

Guidelines for quality management are laid down in a framework directive. One of the reference systems for quality assurance used at Forschungszentrum Jülich is the international standard DIN EN ISO 9001.

Forschungszentrum Jülich, one of Europe’s largest top-class multidisciplinary research institutions, established a dedicated organizational unit for quality management in 2007, which reports directly to the Board of Directors. It advises the institutes and infrastructure divisions and offers assistance as part of mutually agreed annual audit schedules. The organizational unit provides training in quality management for employees of Forschungszentrum Jülich and also organizes training courses for interested external parties. Quality management is also an important part of Forschungszentrum Jülich’s vocational training plan: each trainee must attend a course on this topic as part of his or her vocational training.

With its quality management approach, Forschungszentrum Jülich aims to demonstrate the high standards of its services at all stages of the scientific value chain and to further promote the existing confidence in its work at a regional, national, and international level.
