Participating institutes

Research and development activities related to SOFCs are performed by five subinstitutes: four of them are subinstitutes of the Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK), and one (ZEA-1) is located at the Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics. The individual tasks of these subinstitutes are as follows:

Institute of Energy and Climate Research

Materials Synthesis and Processing (IEK-1)

  • Materials synthesis and development for the electrode-electrolyte unit (i.e. the cell)
  • Materials synthesis and development for contact layers and protective layers on metal interconnects
  • Conversion of feedstocks into materials through the development of suitable media (pastes, slips, suspensions)
  • Development of fabrication technologies for the SOFC substrate, the functional layers, as well as the contact and protective layers
  • Manufacturing of cells in different formats (single cells, stack cells, special formats)
  • Characterization of the powders, media, and the components in terms of their microstructure

Microstructure and Properties of Materials (IEK-2)

  • Materials synthesis and development of high-temperature steels for metal interconnects
  • Thermomechanics of steels, metal sealants, cells, and ceramic joints at room temperature (RT) and higher temperatures (HT)
  • Thermochemistry
  • Detailed materials characterization by means of scanning electron microscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy, as well as RT and HT X-ray diffractometry

Electrochemical Process Engineering (IEK-3)

  • Electrochemical tests and analysis of short stacks and high-performance stacks
  • Optimization of system concepts and control strategies
  • Design and testing of system components for high temperatures
  • Design and testing of systems with an output of several tens of kWs
  • Stack and system modelling
