Renewable resources for the bioeconomy

Renewable resources play a key role in the bioeconomy. Biobased economy is all about creating opportunities to feed a growing world population, produce fuel from suitable biomass and convert industrial production processes such that they rely as little as possible on crude oil. This requires the development of new bio-based value chains, for example to create basic chemical building blocks for industry.

Biomass can be obtained from agriculture, forestry, fisheries and the waste management sector. At the same time, obtaining the necessary knowledge about biological systems is needed to provide the economy with new products.

Forschungszentrum Jülich contributes to the bioeconomy through its biotechnology and crop and soil research. The Jülich institutes cooperate with universities in the Bioeconomy Science Centre (BioSc).

Biotechnology at Jülich focuses on new technologies for developing enzymes, production strains and bioprocesses. This allows renewable resources used industrially or pharmaceutically to be extracted from recyclable materials, which can then be put to use in chemicals, vitamins or detergent enzymes. In crop research, scientists are investigating the role that plants and residual plant matter can play in the sustainable production of food, fuel and everyday products. In cooperation with researchers and industry, they are developing concepts and technology specifically for quantitative plant analysis, known as phenotyping. They do this through their biological expertise, sensors, robotics and automation technology. Jülich-based soil researchers investigate the hydrological and biogeochemical processes that take place in the soil using laboratory simulations and field research.
