Prof. Wolfgang Hoyer

I am Junior Professor for Chemical Biology of Protein Aggregation at Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf and group leader at IBI-7, Forschungszentrum Jülich. I studied chemistry from 1995 to 2000 at the Universities of Münster, York/UK, and Zürich. In my doctorate from 2000 to 2004 at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen with Tom Jovin and Vinod Subramaniam, I worked on the biophysical and biochemical characterization of the aggregation of the Parkinson’s disease-related protein α-synuclein. From 2005 to 2008 I joined the lab of Torleif Härd at University of Gothenburg to investigate the inhibition of the aggregation of amyloid-β peptide, which is of critical importance for Alzheimer’s disease. Since 2009, I am heading a research group at the Institute of Physical Biology at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and at the Institute of Biological Information Processing: Structural Biochemistry (IBI-7) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. My research program is focused on mechanisms of formation of amyloid fibrils and oligomers and their inhibition. For example, my group develops, characterizes and uses binding proteins to amyloidogenic protein targets with the aim to elucidate and modulate the mechanism of protein aggregation.
