About me

Born 1965 in Hamburg, I studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg where I also obtained my doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1993 (Prof. W. A. König). After two postdoctoral years with Professor S. V. Ley (Cambridge, UK), I fulfilled the requirements for my 'Habilitation' – funded by a Liebig-Fellowship and a DFG grant – at the University of Stuttgart in 2001. In 2000/2001 I was a visiting lecturer at the University of Freiburg (Germany), 2001/2002 a guest professor at the University of Cardiff (Wales), and 2002/2003 I held a substitute-professorship at the University of Tübingen (Germany). In 2004, an offer for a professorship at the University in Gießen was declined; since 2004, I holds the position as full professor and chair of Bioorganic Chemistry at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry was founded in a joint effort of the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf and the Forschungszentrum Jülich in the same year. Since 2013, I am also director of IBG-1 at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. My present scientific activities focus on the development of new synthetic methods and its application in active agents/natural product synthesis. Of particular interest are biocatalytical methods: New (and commercially available) enzymes are utilized in chemoenzymatic syntheses.
