Doctoral student Aytekin Demirci now member of HDS-LEE Graduate School

IAS-9 doctoral student Aytekin Demirci is now a member of the Helmholtz School for Data Science in Life, Earth and Energy (HDS-LEE), where he will work on Data mining of Discrete Dislocation Dynamics (DDD) simulations and machine learning to accelerate the design of new materials for extreme conditions, under the supervision of Prof. Stefan Sandfeld and Prof. Axel Klawonn.

HDS-LEE is an international, English-speaking graduate school and a cooperation between RWTH Aachen University, the University of Cologne, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung, and Forschungszentrum Jülich. HDS-LEE is part of the newly founded JARA Center for Simulation and Data Sciences (JARA-CSD), which will be created as a unique, internationally visible competence center for computer- and data-infrastructures, user support as well as methodological and disciplinary research in the fields of simulation, data analysis and HPC technologies.

HDS-LEE provides an interdisciplinary environment for educating the next generation of data scientists in close contact to domain-specific knowledge and research. All three domains – life & medical sciences, earth sciences, and energy systems/materials – are characterized by the experimental generation of huge heterogeneously structured data sets, which have to be evaluated in order to obtain a holistic understanding of very complex systems. The school aims at excellent mathematics, computer science, natural science and engineering graduates who strive to advance the development of data science methodologies and harness the power of state-of-the-art data science technologies to solve challenging scientific problems in the three application domains.

Congratulations, Aytekin!
