Yield Analyses and Socio-economic Impact Assessment of Photovoltaic and Photovoltaic-supported food and energy hybrid Systems in Tropical Nigerian-Beninese Climate

YESPV-NIGBEN

Due to the growing population, the African countries south of the Sahara are confronted with the danger of a food and energy crisis. Climate-friendly ways of generating energy and producing and preserving food are urgently needed here. One of the biggest problems in this context is the need to resolve the conflict that normally exists regarding the use of land for food production or for energy generation. The primary objective of project is to support food and energy production in Nigeria and Benin using climate-friendly and efficient land use practices for food and energy production. The project results will contribute to a clear roadmap for the implementation of renewable energy technologies in Africa and serve as a guide for policy makers, investors, researchers, and other relevant stakeholders.

Key objectives:

  • Investigating the yield of PV systems and PV-powered greenhouses in tropical Nigerian climate
  • An assessment of the socio-economic impact of the PV systems and the PV-powered greenhouse for integrated food and energy production on the host communities
  • Implementing the SUNFarming 5-in-1 concept for energy and food production in Nigeria
  • Obtaining a reference data set on the yield profile of PV systems in the tropics which will be relevant for PV system designers, installers, potential investors like SUNFarming GmbH and marketers.
  • Capacity building in PV and PV-powered SUNFarming integrated food and energy production through hands-on training.
