Prof. Dr. Rüdiger-A. Eichel Eichel is Scientific Director of the Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK-9, Fundamental Electrochemistry) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. At the same time, he heads the Chair of Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion (IESW) at the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences at RWTH Aachen University. Prof. Eichel is also the founding director of the NRW Competence Center for Sustainable Electrochemical Process Engineering (ELECTRA).

Prof. Eichel received his doctorate from the Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich and completed his habilitation in physical chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 2012, he was appointed full professor at RWTH Aachen University and took on the position of scientific director of IEK-9 at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

The focus of his research activities is electrochemistry and energy process engineering for batteries, fuel cells and electrolysers. The development of novel technologies to transform the energy system is particularly emphasized. Different concepts of energy storage and sector coupling through Power-to-X are particularly important in order to enable a “green hydrogen economy” and a “carbon circular economy”. Prof. Eichel coordinates several lighthouse projects in these areas, such as the KOPERNIKUS project P2X, the incubator Sustainable Renewable Value Chains (iNEW) or the State Center of Excellence for the Development of High-Performance Solid-State Batteries (HIPSTER). To date, Prof. Eichel has published more than 200 refereed scientific publications and has been recognized as a “Highly Cited Researcher” several times.
