From Rain Showers to Floods

Helmholtz centres launch campaign to measure impact of hydrological extremes

Jülich/Müglitztal, 14 May 2019 – Extreme weather events such as storms, heavy rainfall, and resulting floods have a long-term influence on Earth and environmental systems. To investigate the impact of hydrological extremes in a holistic manner – from precipitation to infiltration, runoff, and flow into the ocean – a measurement campaign has now been launched in Müglitztal, Saxony, as part of the Helmholtz initiative MOSES. For the campaign, Forschungszentrum Jülich is using balloonsondes equipped with measuring instruments to study the long-term impacts of storms.
