Excellence Initiative Confirms Aachen-Jülich Region as Centre of Excellence in Computational Science

[16. Oktober 2006]

Jülich, 16 October 2006 - The new Chairman of the Board of Directors of Forschungszentrum Jülich, Prof. Achim Bachem, today congratulated RWTH Aachen University on its success in the Federal Government's Excellence Competition. Aachen will receive support for a graduate school in the field of computational engineering science.

"Aachen's success confirms our choice of the RWTH as the outstanding German partner for our joint foundation of the German Research School for Simulation Science", Bachem was happy to note. Just a few weeks ago, the German Research School was described by the Federal Minister of Research and Education, Annette Schavan, as a completely new form of university training for Germany's rising scientific elite.

A characteristic feature of the German Research School is the complementary expertise of the two partners - RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich. "The ongoing development of Jülich into a European supercomputer centre and government support for the Aachen graduate school means that the Aachen-Jülich region is rapidly becoming a German centre of excellence in the field of computer science", added Bachem.
