Diagnosing Schizophrenia Earlier

Changes in brain point to increased risk of disorder

Jülich / Düsseldorf, 26 March 2012 – Even healthy offspring of patients with schizophrenia display disturbed communication between brain regions. This is the result of a study by scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and Wayne State University in Detroit. They investigated the brain activity of test subjects and then used mathematical models to depict the interaction between brain regions. The results of this study are intended to help diagnose schizophrenia at an early stage. The study is published in the current edition of the highly respected journal “Archives of General Psychiatry”.
