Simulation of Proton Racing in Cells

Jülich, 11 June 2012 – The way in which protons move along the membrane walls of biological cells is one of the decisive issues in understanding bioenergetic processes. By means of experimental studies and computer simulations in a simplified model, scientists from Jülich and Linz, Austria, have now obtained important insights into the transport processes. They discovered a boundary layer along which protons can move practically unimpeded without losing their binding to the membrane surface. The results have been published online in in the latest edition of the journal PNAS (DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1121227109).
