Magnetic Version of Cherenkov Effect Discovered

Jülich, 6 January 2014 – Future computers will perform calculations faster and consume less energy. This will be made possible by using the magnetic moment of electrons – their "spin" – to process data rather than their charge. Electrons will then no longer have to flow, but must merely transfer the spin information. Researchers have now simulated a new physical effect which is very promising for the implementation of this concept. This new effect is a magnetic version of the well-known Cherenkov effect.
