Flow Predictions for Your Nose

Supercomputers Help Impeded Nose Breathing

Jülich, 25 October 2017 – Autumn is the time for the sniffles. In most cases, a cold will go away by itself after a few days. But the symptoms do not always disappear to quickly: for approximately 11 % of the population, nasal airway obstruction is chronic. As part of the Rhinodiagnost project, experts from the Jülich Supercomputing Centre and RWTH Aachen University are working together with specialists from industry to support physicians in making the – often difficult – decision for or against an operation. The aim is to set up a service network that will provide individual 3D models and flow simulations on supercomputers as additional decision-making aids.
