Research Data Management

Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library offers tangible support on research data management (RDM).

Research data are a foundation of scientific work. The existing diversity of such data matches the diversity of different scientific disciplines, interests, and research procedures. Due to the fast-paced digital transformation and the increasing abundance of data, the handling and use of research data are changing dramatically. In addition, the large research funding bodies increasingly require thorough and transparent research data management that is publicly available. One of the main reasons is that research data are created to a large extent by means of public funding.

Research data include measurement data, laboratory values, audiovisual information, texts, survey data, objects from collections, and samples that are created, developed, or analysed as part of scientific work. They may also include methodological test procedures such as questionnaires, software, and simulations since these can also represent central results of scientific research. Research data occur in every scientific discipline, and – depending on the stage of the data’s life cycle – in various media types and formats, as well as aggregation and quality levels.
