The research centre itself is not part of the network of public roads and is therefore not recognised by navigation systems.
By car
Coming from Cologne (Köln) via the A4 motorway (Cologne –Aachen) there are two possibilities:
- exit Merzenich: there in the roundabout take the first exit to theright in direction L264 (Niederzier/Jülich). Continue for about 11 km straight ahead until the sign "Forschungszentrum Hambacher Tor", then turn left.
- exit Düren: there turn right towards B56 (Jülich). After about 10 km turn off to the right onto L253, follow the signs to the research center "Forschungszentrum".
Coming from Aachen on the motorway A44 (Aachen – Düsseldorf) take the exit Jülich-West, at the first roundabout turn left towards Jülich, at the second roundabout turn right towards B56 (Düren). After about 5 km turn left onto the L253, follow the signs to "Forschungszentrum".
Coming from Düsseldorf on the A44 motorway (Düsseldorf –Aachen), there are two options:
- (shorter distance with city traffic) turn right at the exit Jülich-Ost onto the B55n. Follow it for about 500 m in the direction of Jülich before turning right towards Jülich. After 200 m turn left, continue to the roundabout "Merscher Höhe", turn left there, pass the solar campus of the University of Applied Sciences, continue straight ahead along Brunnenstraße, cross Römerstraße, continue on Wiesenstraße, behind the roundabout and the caravan dealer turn left to the "Forschungszentrum" (sign posted).
- (longer distance, but faster traffic flow) take exit Jülich-West, at the first roundabout turn left towards Jülich, at the second roundabout turn right towards B56 (Düren); after approx. 5 km turn left onto the L253, follow the signs to "Forschungszentrum".
From airports by car
From Cologne/Bonn Airport, take the A59 (Cologne/Düsseldorf exit) via the A559 to junction 1 (Cologne-Gremberg), then the A4 (Aachen). Continue as "coming from Cologne".
From Düsseldorf Airport, take the A52 motorway (direction Düsseldorf – Mönchengladbach), then the A57 (direction Cologne)
to Neuss-West, continue on the A46 to junction Wanlo, then take the A61 (direction Koblenz/Aachen) to junction Jackerath and then the A44 (direction Aachen). Continue as "coming from Düsseldorf".
From airports by train
From the train station at the airport Cologne/Bonn there are two possibilities with the S-Bahn (S19):
- to Merzenich: from there take the express bus line SB35 (Rurtalbus).
- to Düren: from there take the Rurtalbahn (RTB) to station
"Forschungszentrum" (please announce your wish to stop, as the Forschungszentrum is a request stop). From there, take
bus line 219 to the Research Centre. The 219 runs Monday to Friday from 5:48 am to 7:03 pm. You can also walk. It will take you approximately 20 minutes to reach the main entrance on foot. The distance is about 1.3 km.
From the train station at the airport Düsseldorf take the regional train (RE1) to Cologne Central Station. From there continue as from Cologne Airport. (Please note: Some trains go straight through to Düren, others you have to change at Cologne central station.)
By bus or train
Coming from Aachen take the regional train (RB20, RE1, RE9) to Düren Hbf. From there continue as from Cologne Bonn Airport.
Coming from Aachen with the express bus SB20 or line 220 (Rurtalbus).
Coming from Cologne either take the regional train (RE1, RE9) to Düren Hbf or the S-Bahn (S19) to Merzenich. From there continue as from Cologne/Bonn Airport.
