Careers

We at the Institute for Energy and Climate Research IEK-1 – Materials Synthesis and Processing are an international, interdisciplinary and dynamic team. Our four exciting and future-oriented research fields open up a broad spectrum of tasks and activities. Therefore, we have a variety of opportunities to participate in research. A healthy team spirit as well as a high degree of communication are promoted and expected at IEK-1. Thereby, our motivation to achieve something in the community goes beyond research.

Post-Docs

After you have obtained your PhD, we offer you the opportunity to work as a project leader, conducting both theory-oriented projects and those aiming to meet the current needs of industry, in a position of responsibility. Your work includes planning and conducting scientific experiments, as well as evaluation and documentation. Your field of activity is rounded off by the presentation of results at international conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

PhD Students

As part of the Jülich model the professors of the institute at IEK-1 hold chairs at the RWTH Aachen, the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the Universität Duisburg-Essen, the Univesity of Bonn and at the University of Twente (Netherlands). These chairs allow direct supervision of doctoral theses at the institute. The topics of the doctoral theses cover all of the institute's research priorities. The period for writing a doctoral thesis has been set at three years.

Diploma candidates and Bachelor's-,Master's theses

The institute offers the opportunity to carry out diploma and master's theses in all of the institute's research areas. It aims at students enrolled in both universities and universities of applied sciences. Theses are generally carried out in close cooperation with the supervisor at your university. If you are interested, please contact the head of the department or group leader directly.

Engineers

For graduates of universities of applied sciences, we offer the opportunity to participate in projects. Your duties include the development of processing techniques for manufacturing functional coatings and components and for their characterization, independent implementation of smaller-scale industrial projects, as well as the documentation and presentation of results. Experimental expertise is one of the major prerequisites for your job.

Technicians

The institute has an exceptionally well-equipped inventory of equipment for manufacturing functional coatings and components. As a technician, you are responsible for the equipment operated in your area of work and you support the group leaders in their procurement of new machinery. In addition to the operation of the equipment, independent implementation of series of experiments for optimizing process parameters and documenting these experiments is an important task.

Laboratory assistants

Lab work is at the foundation of all of the institute's research areas. As a lab assistant, you fabricate functional coatings and components independently. To this end, optimization of the process parameters is an integral part of your work. A second priority is the characterization and documentation of the individual process steps and the functional properties of the components which have been manufactured.

Trainees

IEK-1 offers interested candidates a variety of training opportunities. Depending on the occupation, interested candidates can get to know the skilled work carried out in the labs, the workshop, or in information technology. As a laboratory assistant, you will learn how functional coatings and components are manufactured or how the parameters for powder technology processes are optimized. In the workshop, the priority is on the fabrication of experimental facilities with the assistance of modern machine tools. Mathematical and technical software developers (MATSEs) learn the conceptual design, realization, and maintenance of software systems using specific examples from research. For MATSE trainees in Jülich, a bachelor's degree in "Scientific Programming" at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Jülich Campus, has been part of the training course since 1 September 2007.
